The 2024 L1ON campaign began with the First Round of the L1 Cup, where goals were aplenty and victories were relished.

Waterloo winners

Rim Park was the home of the opening fixture of the L1 Cup, where BVB IA Waterloo’s women’s team produced a super second-half performance to record a 3-0 win against ProStars. Danielle Sauve bagged a brace before Hilary Washington sealed the home side’s progression into the next round 10 minutes from time.

Two days later, the BVB IA Waterloo men’s side were also victorious as they saw off Windsor City 2-1 at St. Clair’s College. Malachi Ramsay put the visitors in front in the eighth minute before Matthew Andres brought Windsor level after the break, and Wesley Cain fired home a late winner for Waterloo.

Fadi Salback bagged a double alongside a solitary Josiah Sowa strike as North Toronto spoiled TFC Academy’s return to League1 Ontario with a 3-0 win. This feisty all-Toronto clash also saw both sides reduced to ten men.

The following day, a lone Dante D’Oria strike for Championship-side FC London sent the home side Sudbury Cyclones out in the First Round, who will now concentrate on gaining promotion from League2.

The Borough win debut

In another League2 vs Championship clash, The Borough FC edged past Pickering to reach the Round of 16 in their inaugural game. Pratik Tamhankar and Ancelmo Pascoal netted for the home side, and Isaiah Wisdom’s goal back was not enough to save the visitors from losing on their return to senior League1 level.

The women’s First Round saw goals fly in everywhere. Ella Cahill and Jahkaya Davis were the stars of the show for Scrosoppi on the club’s League1 women’s debut; they both scored doubles to help their side to a 4-0 victory over Burlington.

Pickering and Hamilton United played out a thrilling 2-2 draw at the Pickering Soccer Centre, live on League1 Ontario YouTube. Jaiden Morgan bagged a double for the visitors while Natalie Coscarella and Mackenzie Scott netted for the Pickering, who were slender victors on penalties.

A five-star performance from Rush Canada saw them cruise past Master’s FA’s women’s team 5-0 in a battle between two senior L1ON debutant teams. Sarah Smith and an own goal from Krystina Carvalho had the visitors two up after 15 minutes before Lisamarie Arangio, Alyssa Stephenson and Emma Deschatelets completed the scoring.

Two goals in two minutes saw Darby sweep Unionville Milliken out of the cup. Sarah Foster and Tori Chia were the goalscorers for the home side.

More big wins

A second-half masterclass from Woodbridge Strikers saw them secure a comfortable 4-1 win over Unionville Milliken. Jacob Spizzirri, Justin Cicchillo, Anthony Morano and Marshall Ronaldo were the goalscorers for the home side, with Dominic Parris netting the consolation for the visitors.

Master’s FA dismissed ProStars by the same scoreline as goals from Daniel Avila, Elijah Seymour, Deandre Branch and Lorenzo Maysr saw the visitors win 4-1. Milan Beader did equalize in the 26th minute but it proved to be a consolation for the hosts.

First half goals from Keani Fairbanks and Mauro Lulli guided Burlington to a comfortable 2-0 win over Rush Canada at the Corpus Christi.

Luca Ragagnin’s 86th-minute winner from the penalty spot saw St Catharines Roma Wolves edge past North Mississauga to end up on the right side of a 3-2 scoreline. Michael Fernandez and Nolan Bosetti were also on the scoresheet for the winners.

Hamilton United and Darby faced off last night in the final game of the round, with Darby coming away as 3-1 winners.

Tecumseh United forfeited their Women’s L1 Cup game due to lack of player availability, so St Catharines progressed by default.

Where next?

The women’s bracket has some very exciting ties in the Round of 16.

Pickering – who edged past Hamilton United on penalties – are on the road to previous L1 Cup winners Woodbridge Strikers, and the victorious side will face either North Toronto or Women’s Premier Division reigning champions Alliance United in the quarterfinals.

Rush Canada have been rewarded with a tough test against Vaughan Azzurri in the next round, and the winner of this tie will then face North Mississauga or Darby.

BVB IA Waterloo’s 3-0 win over ProStars has earned them a visit to FC London, where either Guelph Union or NDC Ontario will be waiting for the winner.

The Premier Division’s Simcoe County Rovers will be welcoming League2 side St Catharines Roma Wolves in a matchup to certainly keep an eye on, and the victors will face either Blue Devils or Scrosoppi.

The Men’s Bracket isn’t too dissimilar in terms of interesting matchups.

Master’s FA, who comfortably dispatched ProStars 4-1, will be heading to Alliance United in the Round of 16; the winner meeting either North Toronto or Woodbridge Strikers in the quarterfinals.

A trip to Sigma awaits BVB IA Waterloo, and after winning their five-goal thriller, St Catharines Roma Wolves are to face Premier side Vaughan Azzurri.

FC London’s narrow victory over debutants Sudbury Cyclones has earned them a visit to the Premier Division Blue Devils, with the victors locking horns with 2023 high-flyers Scrosoppi or Burlington in the last eight.

The Borough FC’s success against Pickering sees them on the road to former Men’s Premier champions Guelph United in a League2 verses Premier Division clash, while reigning champions Simcoe County Rovers await Darby.
