Woodbridge Through To Women's 2018 L1 Cup Final After Rogers Finish

By Kacian Whyte, 07/23/18, 3:45PM EDT

Woodbridge Strikers advance to the women's 2018 L1 Cup Finals after a 1-0 victory over De Ro United FA in an entertaining semi-final at Vaughan Grove, Woodbridge on Sunday evening.

The match started with both sides playing in a 4-4-2 diamond formation, which made for an evenly matched first half.

Both sides struggled to make it fast the defensive lines, which caused the majority of the game to be played in the mid-field. On one occasion, Woodbridge's Caleigh Copland tried to carry the ball down the centre but was immediately shut down by a mob of De Ro defenders.

Melanie Forbes and Sara Di Benedetto tried to lead the De Ro attack, but faced tough opposition as Cathryn Rogers moved from the centre to the wing to assist left back Erica Brunet defend that flank.

A scoreless first half ensured the battle continued into the second half. It seemed the 0-0 scoreline wouldn't last long though as Woodbridge immediately managed to make an attempt on net before Jayda Hylton-Pelaia placed the follow-up effort over the cross-bar.

Woodbridge soon managed to break the deadlock, as Rogers (58') slotted the ball into the net after receiving a ball from Copland, who had already beaten the keeper and two defenders to get Rogers the ball.

In the remainder of the match De Ro made two strong attempts on goal as they tried to score from a pair of free-kicks but it was not enough to get past the Woodbridge Strikers' net-minder, Vanessa Fiore, who finished the match with a clean sheet.

Woodbridge Strikers move on to play Unionville Milliken S.C. in the women's 2018 L1 Cup Finals on Aug 4 at the Ontario Soccer Centre.
