Second Half Lacava Strike Helps Unionville Sink Darby

Unionville Milliken S.C. recorded a 1-0 victory over Darby FC on home soil to move into third place in the League1 Ontario women's standings on Saturday afternoon.

After an electric opening from the home side, it was Darby who grew into the match and began to dictate play out from the back.

Darby's Lauryn Arruda did well to beat her marker down the right wing in the 19th minute, playing a perfect ball across the face of goal but there were no teammates to slot it home.

Following the first half hydration break and a short team talk, Unionville came out looking like a different side and never looked back.

In the 28th minute, Unionville's #9, Natasha Klasios, had the ball played into her feet and turned her defender, but her ensuing effort was sent well over the bar.

Klasios again turned her defender in the 37th minute, unleashing a rocket from 25 yards out, but this time her effort skimmed the upper side of the crossbar.

At the break, the score remained 0-0.

Unionville started the second half similar to the first, and eventually got their goal through Tina Lacava (50').

After being played short off a corner, Lacava looked up and curled her effort into the top corner, past Spridgeon in the Darby goal.

The home side did not let up after gaining the lead, keeping possession and firing shots at the Darby goal for large spells in the second interval.

Darby eventually broke out of their shell but it wasn't enough as the home side stood firm to collect all three points.

With the win, Unionville move to 14 points (4-1-2) and will face a tough opponent in Vaughan Azzurri on July 14 (6 p.m.) at the Ontario Soccer Stadium.

Darby remain on four points (1-4-1) and will host league leading FC London at the Darlington Sports Center on July 14 (5:30 p.m.).
