Chelsea Cheung (90’+ 1) scored an equalizer in the closing minutes of the match, salvaging a point for Unionville in a 1-1 draw with DeRo United.
The match was a tug-of-war in possession and ball play, with two evenly balanced oppositions struggling to put shots on target.
In the first half, both teams came out at full force looking for the early goal. DeRo United suffered an injury within the first few minutes of the match. DeRo United’s Katherine Koehler-Grassau needed to be temporarily sidelined with a bloody nose.
With one less player on the field, DeRo United adjusted accordingly and found their breakthrough goal. Kodee Williams (10’) would find the back of the net while her teammate was still being treated on the sidelines.
The early goal didn’t break Unionville as they fought hard to stay in the game. They continued their pursuit for the equalizer into the second half with physical and high pressure play.
In the 68th minute, Unionville achieved their first shot on target since the half commenced. Both sides struggled with unleashing shots on target, Unionville had a total of of three shots on net and DeRo United with a total of four shots on goal.
A minute into additional time, Unionville's Cheung struck the ball just outside the 18-yard-box to give her team the equalizing goal.
Unionville were on the receiving end of three yellow cards, Caroline Tepelenas (63’), Kayla Goncalves (76’) and Kendall Macauly (88’).
The equalizer leaves Unionville with a record of 2W-1L-2T and DeRo United with 2W-1L-3T.
DeRo United will visit North Mississauga at the Hershey Centre on Sunday June 24th (3:00 p.m.) in the quarter-final round of the women’s L1 Cup.
Dero United will resume with a regular season game next month on July 8th (3:45 p.m.) against Toronto Azzurri Blizzard in the Azzurri Village Main.
Unionville will travel to Stewart Burnett Park on Saturday June 16th (7:00 p.m.) to take on Aurora FC.
They will also be participating in the quarter-finals of the Women’s L1 Cup on Sunday June 24th (3:00 p.m) at the Azzurri Village Main against Toronto Blizzard.
