Faber (33’) and Ghoniem (52’) strike one in each half for Vaughan Azzurri SC, sending them into the second round of the League1 Cup.

The sun was beating down at McNaughton Turf at noon as Vaughan Azzurri came out strong in the first half with an early chance from Cassandre Van Bakel forcing Hamilton United goalkeeper Marilena Spagnolo to make a two-handed save.

Possession was shared by both teams with Vaughan having more success than Hamilton in the attacking third of the field outshooting their opponents 5-1 in the first half forcing Spagnolo to make 4 saves.

The stalemate would be broken when Jessie Faber (33’) beat her defender and struck a right footed shot that took a deflection into the back of the net.

Vaughan had the chance to go up by two goals on Hamilton at the 45-minute mark after a penalty kick was awarded due to a foul committed on Van Bakel by Hamilton’s Spagnolo.

The Hamilton keeper would redeem herself when she dove the right way making the two-handed save denying Claudia Piazza.

Hamilton would get some fresh legs onto the field for the second half. They moved the ball well searching for a goa,l but couldn’t quite crack Vaughan’s defence despite outshooting their opponents 4-2 and obtaining six corners this half.

Vaughan still found a way to get on the scoresheet again, when Sarah Wong-Yin Sang crossed the ball in the box for Nour Ghoneim (54’) who made no mistake heading the ball into the back of the net just as she did last week against Darby FC, earning MVP honours for her team two weeks in a row.

Hamilton’s best effort would come in extra time as Gabriella Cipriano fired a left footed shot on goal sending Vaughan goalkeeper Taylor Grant diving in mid-air to make the nice acrobatic save.

Hamilton’s Gurjeena Jandu would earn MVP honours for her team after being a crucial part of the defensive line for them.

With this win, Vaughan will play FC London in the second round of the Women's League1 Cup.

Both teams square off again on June 2 (12 p.m.) at McNaughton Turf for a league match, which is sure to be a nail bitter given their familiarity with one another now.
