It was a beautiful Thursday evening in London and fans were treated to a gritty team effort from both FC London and the Oakville Blue Devils. The FC London fans would go home happy, as the home team won 1-0.

In the early going, FC London looked to attack early and often as L1OW goal scoring leader Jade Kovacevic had a great chance in the 3rd minute when Ashley Campbell played a ball behind the Oakville defence and Kovacevic drove a shot low that was saved by Blue Devils keeper Patricia Koutoulas.

In the 9th minute, Koutoulas robbed Kovacevic again to keep the score at 0-0. Koutoulas was the star in the first 20 minutes as she kept her team in the game.

Oakville would settle play down in the 15th minute but throughout the half, both teams were battling for control of the midfield.

As the half wore on, FC London continued to push for the game’s first goal. Right before the ref could signal for half-time, Kovacevic (45') picked up the ball in the 18-yard box and fired a shot low to the corner to give the home side a halftime lead of 1-0.

The second half would see London continue to control possession and in the 55’ minute started a build up from the back that culminated with a combination play where Kovacevic played Julia Benati into the box but Koutoulas stoned Benati giving her team hope that they were still in the game.

With Oakville searching to find that tying goal and London looking to find that insurance lead, physical play was a theme for the last 45 minutes. 12 fouls were committed in the 2nd half alone, four for FC London and eight for the Blue Devils.

In the last 10 minutes, the game opened up as the Oakville pushed forward. However, they were unable to threaten London keeper Emily Gillet’s bid for a second clean sheet of the season.

FC London will have a week off while other teams will be partaking in League1 Cup play this weekend. London will take their undefeated record on the road and travel to Aurora on June 2 (4:00 p.m.).
