Vaughan Azzurri SC took on visitors Darby FC at McNaughton Turf Saturday afternoon and treated the home fans to a 5-1 win in Matchweek 4.

Vaughan would come out strong in the first half moving well as a unit, dominating possession, and setting the pace of the game. Their high-pressure tactic would prevail in the 10th minute of play after Sarah Wong-Yin Sang’s cross found Cassandre Van Bakel, who snuck in behind the defenders and buried a volley into the back of the net.

The Azzurri wouldn’t stop there, as they kept Darby on the back foot and found the goal three more times in a span of 18 minutes, outshooting their opponents 9-1 in the first half.

Claudia Piazza’s corner would find Nour Ghoneim (15’) as she buried her header into the back of the net. Ghoneim (25’) would get her second of the game 10 minutes later after her powerful strike went bar down into the net, giving Darby goalkeeper Alyssa Spridgeon no chance for the save.

Three minutes later, Jessie Faber would find Ghoneim’s feet who cleverly flicked it on for Colleen Beesley (28’) as she made no mistake putting it into the back of the net. Ghoneim would earn MVP honours on Vaughan’s side.

Darby played defence the whole first half but would come out with a bite in the second half finally settling down, gaining more possession, and getting a few chances on goal.

Darby's half-time substitute Caitlyn Knight (56’) wouldn’t let Vaughan goalkeeper Taylor Grant come away with the clean sheet after Knight fought her way into the box and tapped one into the back of the net after a flick-on header from her teammate.

The rest of the game saw Darby moving better as a unit, fighting hard, and reducing Vaughan’s chances on goal. Abigail Hubble would earn MVP honours for Darby as the centre back made crucial tackles and controlled Darby’s defensive line.

Van Bakel (85’) would seal the game up for her team and got her second of the match after using her speed to beat a Darby defender down the left flank and bury a left footed strike into the top right corner.

With this win, Vaughan move into second place with a 3-1-0 record and just a point behind newcomers, Hamilton United.
