Durham United stood strong against a high pressing Vaughan Azzurri side to take a 2-1 victory on Matchweek 2 at McNaughton Turf.

Durham keeper Sara Petrucci was tested early and often in this match, stopping five shots in the first 25 minutes - two of which were shots fired from the top of the box.

After 45 minutes of play, Vaughan would amass 10 shots, six of which were on target, and another two that rang off the crossbar.

The second half began just like the first half, with Vaughan dictating play and applying a lot of pressure on their opponents deep in their half.

However, after a change in formation for the Azzurri from a 4-3-3 to a 3-5-2, Durham were able to capitalize on mistakes and got on the scoreboard first, with half-time sub Diarra Simmons chipping the keeper and winger Victoria McCartney (63') getting in the way of the Vaughan clearance to put the ball in the net.

DUFA got the insurance goal they needed after Laura Gosse (76') won the ball at half and went 1v1 with Vaughan’s Taylor Grant, slotting it right under the rushing keeper.

The Azzurri threw themselves forward in the last ten minutes in hopes to get at least one past Petrucci. They were rewarded after second half sub Ashley Nater (82') fired her first of the season past a diving Petrucci.

Vaughan’s persistence on goal would get under the skin of Durham, resulting in a penalty kick in the 89th minute, but Nour Ghoneim’s shot hit the right post and went out for goal kick.

When the final whistle blew, Vaughan's high pressure offence was not able to come out on top over the strong back-line of Durham.

This was Durham's first win of the season, as they now sit with a 1W- 1L - 0D record.

As for Vaughan, they lose their first of the season and share an identical record with their opponents (1W - 1L - 0D)

The Azzurri will look to get back to winning ways in Matchweek 3, when they travel to Wesley Clover Turf to take on West Ottawa S.C. on May 12 (4:00 p.m)

Up next for Durham United will be another away match on May 13 (4:00 p.m) as they take on first year club Oakville Blue Devils at Sheridan Campus.
