Cassandra Sribny (4') and Andrea Raso (29') kicked off the League1 Ontario season with a goal apiece, giving DeRo United FC the 2-0 win over Durham United FA at L'Amoreaux Park on Friday.

Sribny nabbed the first goal of the season with a header past Durham keeper Sara Pertrucci early in the match. DeRo continued to pile on the pressure, and Andrea Raso later scored the second goal with a low finish.

Durham had some difficulties getting the motor running for the first game. An injury to Kristie Westley spelled an early end for the player's night. That, coupled with the scoreline, forced last season's fifth-place finisher to use four of their five allotted substitutions before the 50-minute mark.

DeRo's debut in the league went as smoothly as their passing. They controlled possession throughout the match with attacking intent by taking 11 shots and limiting Durham to three, helping Olivia Tierney earn the clean sheet.

Despite DeRo’s dominance on the pitch, Durham were able to squeeze past with a few counterattacks to keep the defence honest. The night’s result was disappointing, but there were some glimpses of hope with four months of the season to go.

Durham did a better job of slowing down DeRo in the second half, but the home team seemed content to see out the game with a two-goal lead.

DeRo look to continue their winning ways away from home when they visit Hamilton United Elite next Friday May 4 at Ron Joyce Stadium.

Durham are set to get things back on track in another away day next Saturday May 5 when they meet with Vaughan Azzuri at McNaughton Turf.
