Vanessa Macmillan (45') put the visitors West Ottawa a goal to the good on the stroke of half-time in their Saturday July 1 matchup against league leaders Unionville Milliken, but it was the leaders to emerge triumphant after first Natasha Klasios (50') and then Stella Li (90') put away their chances to create a 2-1 final scoreline.

"In football, especially at the start of the second half, there are a lot of goals scored in the first five minutes of the second half and that is always an objective for us," said Unionville assistant coach Glenn Faulknor.

"We try and capitalize on that and the girls did a good job to get there. We needed that goal to get back in the game, definitely."

"We are dealing with a lot of different injuries and I think they showed the heart that this team has today," he added.

"When they play on the front foot with a never say die attitude, the girls we had in there today did a great job and I'm very happy with the way they played."

West Ottawa had a long way to come before their Canada Day match-up with the current league leaders, and assistant coach Kwame Telmanque thought his side showed a certain sluggishness to begin.

"I think we started off the first fifteen minutes on the back foot and struggled to impose ourselves on the game," he explained.

"We slowly grew into it and it was a reward to get a goal on the last kick of the first half to get into the contest. It was huge mentally."

However, it was a game of slim margins between the red-hot form of Unionville and West Ottawa's standing with their goals for column indicating the best offence in the league. Ultimately, the result came down to nuance and detail in performance.

"It was one of those things," agreed Telemanque.

"Earlier in the half we had the opportunities to go up 2-1, we hit the post and we missed a wide open chance. It was back and forth and it was a combination of errors that cost the goal, but at this level you can't make those mistakes and we got punished for it."

Unionville Milliken SC will next play Woodbridge Strikers on July 8 at Bill Crothers Turf, Unionville.

West Ottawa SC will next play Toronto Blizzard on July 2 at Azzurri Village, Toronto.
