Cassandre Van Bakel (13') and Ashley Nater (48') guided Vaughan Azzurri to a 2-1 victory over Woodbridge Strikers on Matchweek Seven, but Canada U20 player Lauren Raimondo (77') scored for the Strikers late in the second half, sparking a period of momentum for the visitors that threatened the result.

"We need to do better at two nothing, one nothing, to score more goals," said Vaughan Azzurri head coach, Carmine Isacco.

"We create opportunities, we move it well, we create chances, the girls are executing quite well, but the final ball - we keep teams in the game. It happened last week, up two nothing against Unionville, and we gave up two breakaways and you can't blame it on luck - you create your own luck. We have to be more efficient in the final third."

"To be honest we are a little short in the back and some girls are playing out of position but hats off to them, they are doing an honourable job and they need to continue that for ninety minutes," he revealed.

"Good on Taylor Grant, who was mentally there and made two great saves in the end to help us win it."

"That's an important win," he concluded. "To get the three points is massive."

Woodbridge head coach Dave Porco was pragmatic about the result, feeling his side put in "too little, too late."

"Vaughan deserves the win, there is no doubt about it," he said. "We can't play for forty-five minutes only and expect to win the game. That's the bottom line."

"It was the willingness to fight for every ball," he added. "I think we lost too many fifty-fifty balls, then we didn't get the second balls, and that was pretty much the game."

"First of all we need to look at the positives. The second half was better, so we have to look at the positives and start to get ready for Unionville on Tuesday for the Cup."

Vaughan Azzurri will next play Sanjaxx Lions on June 14 at McNaughton Turf, Vaughan in the second round of the 2017 L1 Cup.

Woodbridge Strikers will next play Unionville Milliken SC on June 13 at Bill Crothers Turf, Aurora in the second round of the 2017 L1 Cup.
