Vaughan Azzurri celebrated their clinching of the men's east division title on Sunday with a 6-0 thumping of Kingston Clippers at McNaughton Turf, Vaughan.

Marko Miketic (31'), Jason Mills (36'), Jarek Whiteman (53', 70') and Mario Kovacevic (80', 83') banged in the goals, while Shyon Gaaeni claimed the clean sheet.

"Yes, we were happy," said Vaughan assistant coach, Patrice Gheisar. "Considering the end result we thought the guys did well. Second half was better than the first half, we made some adjustments."

Vaughan had ensured the divisional title with a win the week before, cancelling out any chance of Woodbridge Strikers catching the Azzurri. Gheisar suggested the team already has their minds on the 2016 League1 Ontario Men's Championship Final.

"Obviously some of the older guys were already thinking of the playoff final, so maybe they took their eye off the current game, but we made adjustments and I think they finished well," he said.

"The beauty of League1 is the standard of everything has gone up, and continues going up, and it suits us as all of our boys are looking for meaningful, tough games," he added. "This final is going to be exactly that."

A final league match for Kingston presented a tough challenge for the travelling side, but coach Bob Minor indicated that there were a number of positives to focus on in spite of the result.

"First of all I'd like to congratulate Vaughan for winning the east division and booking their spot in the final in a couple weeks," said Minor. "For us, it was a real pleasure to play the champions in our final game of the season. It was a real honour for us."

"We knew it was going to be difficult and we set our stall out obviously to hold them. We worked on that in training and it's kind of worked for the first twenty, twenty-five minutes, and even after the breakthrough came we still stuck with it. At half-time I was happy that it was only 2-0 down because we had a lot of young players in the team today."

"We had four players under eighteen on the field, and by the end of the game we had six that were either '99 or 2000 born, so I was delighted that they could a chance to experience what it is like to play at a high level and to test themselves against players of real quality. I thought they came through it really well, so for us there are some real positives."

"There's a real talent level that we can work with in the club, and although we've lost the last few games we've always looked at the season in this way. It's no disgrace losing to a team the quality of Vaughan," he concluded.
