On a wet and stormy night in Scarborough, Vaughan Azzurri held off the elements as well as Master's Futbol Academy for a 5-0 win at L'Amoreaux Park.

With the win Vaughan move eight points up on Woodbridge in the battle for top spot in the east division, sitting with 46 points. Master's  remains at the bottom of the table with seven points.

Vaughan did most of the hard work early, scoring three goals in the game's first 11 minutes.

Jashua Mills (3') got the first goal, firing from close range, with Jerek Whiteman (5') adding a second just two minutes later.

A shaken Master's was unable to slow Vaughan down, with only some strong keeping by Dominico Orlandi to prevent the scoreline from getting even more lopsided.

However, Orlandi couldn't keep everything out, and when Mario Kovacevic (11') took advantage of some defensive miscommunication he quickly made it a three goal lead.

Eventually the weather - it was raining heavily - played a part, dampening Vaughan's initiative and allowing Master's to hold its own for the remainder of the half.

In the second half, Vaughan worked in some of squad's younger players, while still managing to add two more goals - Joseph Di Chiara (67') off a beautiful free kick, and Zachary Zitoli (77') on a penalty that he had earned himself.

Vaughan head coach Carmen Isacco praised the work of his younger players.

"It's important (to get them minutes) to get them used to the speed and pace of League1," he said. "They took advantage of their opportunity."

"We're happy with where we are and will sit down this week and work out what we need to do to finish the season strong."

Master's head coach Junior Groves was philosophical after the match.

"If we could control the stuff off the field - players needing to work, unable to properly warm up - we could get our starts under control."

"But that's a good team and I thought that we played them even after the start," he said. "I played several young players and to me that's a win on the development side."

Next up for Vaughan is a visit to Aurora next Saturday with Master's at Woodbridge next Sunday.

Now on 46 points from 19 matches, Vaughan must secure four more points from their remaining three matches to clinch first position in the east division and book a spot in the 2016 League1 Ontario final versus the champion of the west division.
