Vaughan Azzurri followed up on last weekend's L1 Cup championship win to beat Windsor 2-0 and go top of the League1 Ontario west division.

Jahsua Mills (5') scored early, with Ryan Telfer (67') adding one late for Vaughan, while the clean sheet went to Andrew D'Souza.

"I think we were a little worse for wear, but we did what we had to do to win today," said Vaughan head coach, Carmine Isacco. "It wasn't pleasant, but we managed to tempo the game and I thought it's a good win, it's a good three points for us. It's not easy here."

Despite arriving late due to traffic issues, Vaughan got off the bus and started brightly. Isacco lamented missed chances that could have put the match away early.

"I thought we should have put the game away in the first half," he said. "We created what I thought were two 100 per cent goals, but Windsor's Kyle [Vizarakis] is a good keeper."

"We went on and we kept our defensive shape, did what we had to do defensively, and I think it's a fair result. I thought we dealt with the tempo well, but I thought we should have been a little more comfortable in the result. It's good to get out of here with three points."

Both teams had new personnel involved, as a number of mainstays from the season have departed for their College and University programs.

"I think that this was a fairly even match, with two teams that were depleted somewhat because of the change in personnel that happens at this time of year, but regardless it was a good contest, good game, well-played soccer," said Windsor technical director, Vancho Cirovski.

"They finished on their two chances, while we got in the box but we didn't play to score. We've got to work on that part of the game. We've got to remain patient near the box and get really good shots, test the keeper - I don't think the keeper was tested."

After 14 matches, Vaughan (33) is now two points ahead of Woodbridge Strikers (31) at the top of the table. Both teams are on equal number of matches played.

Vaughan plays a red-hot Toronto FC Academy on Aug 14 (2 p.m.) at McNaughton Turf, Vaughan.

After 15 matches, Windsor is now fourth in the east division on 22 points, but must watch their back as North Mississauga sits in fifth position on 19 points, and has two matches in hand on Windsor.

Windsor faces a tough match on Aug 7 (4 p.m.) against Sigma FC at Hershey Centre, Mississauga.

"We'll look a little younger as we finish out the season, but that's really what the program is all about - giving younger players a chance to play," said Cirovski.

"I think today was an unusual day with events and conditions but we'll be a full squad for the next game and carry on for the rest of the season."

"We'll be fit and have enough guys to compete, as we do always, but Sigma is going to be a really strong contest for us. At this point, winning is one thing but really putting the squad out there and making the effort. You cannot fault the effort today. Guys played exceptionally well, we just couldn't combine well enough to finish our chances."
