Woodbridge Strikers beat Darby FC 6-0 on Friday night, but the scoreline gave little reflection of a match that was hard-fought for the first hour.

"The game itself took time to get going," said Woodbridge assistant coach, Cesare Tripodo. "We had a bit of rude awakening as Darby came out strong tonight and with something to prove, and it was not easy."

"We got a couple goals in the first half, and in the second I just asked the girls to be patient, play their game, and not to worry about the opposition. I encouraged them to go out and play the game they know how to play, and they did and scored a few more."

Woodbridge's Vladanka Gurovski (22', 60', 84') scored a hat-trick, while a Jalana Ellis (7', 81') brace and a Christabel Oduro (58') single made it a mountain for Darby to climb.

Woodbridge goalkeeper Hope Sabadash earned the clean shett.

"It was a tough game but we knew we were in for a challenge, playing one of the top two teams in the league," said Darby assistant coach, Stuart Henderson.

"I thought we played well actually. There were spurts in the game when the girls knocked the ball around well, but we did chase the ball a lot and we knew that would be the case going into it."

"I thought the girls played well in the first ten minutes of the second half, and had a couple opportunities," he added. "Unfortunately we didn't take the opportunities, and they did. When they took the third and fourth goal they knew they had us. The girls dropped the heads a little at that point, but they picked them up quickly."

Woodbridge found another gear in the second half, with their experienced core increasingly knocking around the ball at a tempo that fatigued the young Darby side.

"The game itself went in the direction we felt it was supposed to go," said Tripodo.

"Darby is a new team, it's a young group, and they're still building," he added.

"In our group we have a mixture of senior girls that have finished playing university and in some cases have international experience, as well as a large number of talented young players."
