Darby FC women demonstrated great resolve and focus on Saturday, coming back from an early goal to sink visitors Sanjaxx Lions 2-1 at the final whistle.

Sanjaxx's Sona Makulova (12') got the visitors off to a great start, but Darby's Tori Chia (48') and Selah Hopkins (84') took the bit between their teeth and won the game for Darby with two unanswered second half strikes.

"Obviously we're happy for the result, being our first in the season, and we're happy for the girls, especially for the amount of hard work that they have put into the training to get this win," said Darby assistant coach, Stuart Robertson.

"Two quality goals in the second half did it for us today. I think they saw in the first half that they could play with Sanjaxx and in the second half we just executed much better. I think our goals were two quality goals, and we're proud of that."

Sanjaxx head coach Laza Lowe was disappointed that his team couldn't keep pace with their positive start to the match, and felt the outcome was completely within the hands of his players.

"We made it tough tonight," he said. "We are a much better team than the results indicate, but we just need to come to the matches with the impetus to prove that each time. You have to put in a performance to get the result in this game, and we didn't do that for a full ninety minutes."

Sanjaxx will play again on July 16 (4 p.m.) at Monarch Park, Toronto against Vaughan Azzurri.

Darby FC will face Woodbridge Strikers on July 15 (8 p.m.) at Whitby Soccer Centre.

"Yes, our next game is against Woodbridge and we had a hard time against them the last time so this week we will just get back to training and work on our strategy for that match," concluded Robertson.

"This win gives the girls some confidence, which is obviously a good thing for us right now."
