As we get close to the half-way mark of the 2016 League1 Ontario season, there are a number of a players whose form has singled them out as individuals to watch closely.

Before enjoying this weekend's League1 Ontario slate of matches, take a second to familiarize yourself with nine players to watch in matchweek nine!

On Friday night, there are several matches featuring some of the league's top individuals.

On the women's side, league powerhouse teams Durham United FA and FC London will meet at Oshawa Civic Centre, 8 p.m. in a clash that pits two undefeated against each other.

Featuring for FC London is the women's current top scorer, Jade Kovacevic, with twelve goals from six league matches and one in the L1 Cup. If FC London are going to emerge victorious, you can bet Kovacevic will be in on the goals.

On the other side is Durham's Laura Gosse, who previously topped the scoring charts until Kovacevic went on a recent run of form. Gosse has seven goals in six matches. Between Kovacevic and Gosse - there will be plenty of firepower in Oshawa to start the matchweek!

Meanwhile, in Windsor the Stars will be hosting Aurora United FC on Friday night at the University of Windsor. One player to watch is big central forward Jumbo Iyowuna for the Stars, who has banged in five goals in 398 minutes of play - an average of one every 79 minutes.

Sigma hosts Kingston Clippers on Saturday June 25 at Hershey Centre and will certainly be showcasing the current league top scorer, Leaford Allen.

Allen has nine goals in eight matches, and the big central forward has been a menace to opposing defenders. With other goalscorers around the league hitting form, it is up to Allen to keep his consistent strike-rate alive, and in turn his position at the top.

Durham United FA men hit the pitch at Monarch Park on Saturday June 25 (6 p.m.), and will feature the third and fourth top scorers in the league. Kashiff De Jonge scored four against Toronto FC Academy in the previous matchweek to make five on the season. His performances have been crucial to Durham's success, as De Jonge has demonstrated confidence in possession, a creative edge, and an obvious goal-scoring touch.

Teammate Stefan Lammana has the best strike rate to minute ratio in the league at the moment, with five goals from only 384 minutes of play - an average of a goal every 76 minutes.

Fifth in the men's goalscoring race is North Mississauga's Jose Melo, whose five goals in eight games has been instrumental in his team's recent ascendancy. Melo has scored in each of his last three matches, including two against Sanjaxx Lions on June 4. Can he make a contribution to beating Vaughan Azzurri - second in the east division?

First in the east division, Woodbridge Strikers men will head to Toronto FC Academy's Kia Training Grounds on June 26 (1 p.m.). A major contributor to the Strikers top form, at both ends of the pitch, has been captain Andrew Derayeh. With a game winner away to North Toronto, and an important strike in his side's 3-1 win over FC London, Derayeh has proven he scores at big moments. The rest of the time the big defender is helping keep clean sheets - of which Woodbridge already have four this season.

2015 League1 Ontario Golden Boot winners Felipe Vilela (Oakville Blue Devils) and Jessica Lisi (Woodbridge Strikers) were a little quiet to start 2016, but both have shown a return to their golden form of late.

Vilela is currently second in the scoring race with seven goals in eight matches, three of which he bagged last weekend against Master's Saints. Lisi also hit pace recently, getting an incredible seven against Darby and one against Aurora, bringing her to second in the women's scoring chart.

With Oakville facing North Toronto on June 26 (3 p.m.) and Woodbridge against North Miss on June 26 (7 p.m.) - can Vilela and Lisi shoot back to the top?
