In a game that saw both teams desperately in need of a result, the Woodbridge Strikers defeated Kingston Clippers by a 4-0 score line, with goals from Cameron Brooks, Andrew Derayeh, Stephen Almeida and Damien Graham.

The win not only sees them bounce back from a heavy 4-1 defeat to Vaughn Azzurri last week, but also ends the Strikers three match losing run (League + Cup) and moves them up the League1 Ontario standings.

As for the Clippers, they still remain one of only two clubs that are winless on the season.

It was a fairly open game at the start, with Kingston almost immediately on the back foot, forcing the visitors to play on the counter and scramble to keep possession in midfield. Woodbridge started the game in a 4-3-3 formation, a change in tactics by coach Peter Pinizzotto from last weeks’ match, looking to capitalize on wide play and using its speed advantage through players like Nicholas Chiarot and Stephen Almeida.

It didn’t take long for the host to break the deadlock.

Off a set play in the seventh minute, Christian Cavallini played the ball into the box and Brooks rose above his marker with a powerful header past goalkeeper Thomas Daechsel.

This seemed to wake Clippers, who were playing with more ridgid tactics in a 4-4-2 system under coach Chris Eveleigh.

Kingston had some good spalls of possession at times in the first half, and had opportunities on a number of corners and free kicks, but Woodbridge keeper Matt George was never truly tested.

The home side continued to press the ball, make good use of its front three of Chiarot, Almeida and Michael Holder, and it paid off again five minutes before half time. A scramble in the box seeing Holder get the ball to teammate Andrew Derayeh, who finished from close range and put the Strikers up 2-0 at the break.

A half time team talk solved nothing for Kingston, as it only took three minutes into the second half for Woodbridge to tack on a third goal. After a turnover in its own end, the visitors failed to close down Almeida as he cut inside from the left wing and chipped the ball over Daechsel.

As if the growing score line wasn’t bad enough, the Clippers didn’t have luck on its side either. Kingston was awarded a penalty in the fifty-third minute after a player was taken down in the box, but Oliver Coren stepped up and proceeded hit the post.

The game was officially over as a contest when the Strikers put a fourth past Daechsel in the seventy-ninth, when substitute Damien Graham came across goal, rounded the keeper, and cooly rolled the ball into the back of the net.

Woodbridge will look to build off this win when they travel to Kia Training Ground to take on Toronto FC Academy on Sunday, July 6. As for the Clippers, they host Internacional de Toronto on Saturday, July 5 in a battle of the league's two winless teams.
