League1 newcomers ProStars FC played host to Durham United FC at Toronto's Lamport Stadium on Opening Day, and it was Durham, under new head coach Sanford Carabin, who walked away with the full points after Matt Stowell and Le Shaun Young grabbed a pair of first half tallies.

DURHAM UNITED F.C.: MATT STOWELL

"The first key moment for us was scoring a goal just two minutes into the game," said Carabin. "That settled us and gave some early confidence. However, the second goal midway through the first half changed us. We started getting complacent and allowed them to dictate play for the remainder of half."

"A couple of very good saves from our goalkeeper Ben Cowman early in the second half allowed us to stay two up and helped us see out the game," added Carabin.

Carabin was quite pleased with the performance of his new look backline.

"I thought our best players tonight were our back four ( Jacob Sooklal, La Shaun Young, Joe Zupo and Bruce Cullen). They were very organized and composed. They won virtually all of their 1v1 battles defensively and were pivotal in our build up play in attack."

Despite not managing to get a ball past DUFC 'keeper Ben Cowman, ProStars #10 David Alva earned praise for his play.

"I thought Alva was their best player, especially in second half," said Carabin. "He was influential in the ability to link their defense to attack, always looked dangerous in transition and gave the final pass in many of their attacks."

"The main challenges we faced were our team fitness and the playing surface," said Carabin.  "Lamport is a max dimension field which required the players to cover large spaces. Players are still not at full fitness and having to open the season on this pitch made it difficult."

"Nonetheless, we will take a lot of positives from the game," concluded Carabin.
