Stephen Almeida opened the scoring for Woodbridge Strikers in the 30th minute, and Damian Graham finished it off for the hosts in the 74th, as the Strikers completed a perfect 2-0 result over the visiting Durham United FC, ending the visitor's undefeated run to start the season.

"The key moment was a defensive miscommunication on a backpass between our goalkeeper and centreback, leading to Woodbridge's second goal," said Durham assistant coach Ron Clarke. "Just prior to that we had then under heavy pressure. The goal was deflating and made it more of a struggle to come back."

"I thought tonight we played very well for the full 90 minutes," said Woodbridge head coach Peter Pinizzotto. "We did not give Durham many scoring chances, and this was the result of playing disciplined as a team. Anytime you do not concede much to the other team you know that the team is working very hard."

"Woodbridge did a great job of defending in the team's defensive third," confirmed Clarke. "We could not break them down. Adjustments were made in the second half  and the boys responded very well to a change in formation - something we had not done to this point of the season."

Pinizotto singled out Almeida, for special mention, but praised the overall work of the team unit as the difference maker on the day.

"This was a great team effort. Instead of picking a top player, I credit the team," said the Strikers' gaffer.  "I thought the turning point in the game was getting that first goal before half time.  Durham is a much improved team over last year, a very hard team to play against, and also a hard working team."

Durham get back to home grounds next week with a match vs. Vaughan Azzurri at Pickering Soccer Centre, while Woodbridge will head off to King City for an away date with ANB Futbol.
