In the first round of the Women's L1 Cup on Tuesday night, ANB Futbol's Kelsey Araujo (47') put away the first goal against Durham United F.C. in the still young 2015 League1 Ontario Women's season, but it was small consolation as DUFC ultimately won the contest by a landslide of 8-1.

"Considering this was a Cup game, we made a conscious decision to try some new things," said ANB head coach, Marcelo Almeida. "As such, we used some younger call-ups, and tried players in different positions. It was tough for some of the younger players to get accustomed to the speed of play of a quality, experienced team. Additionally, for some, it was the second match in 48 hrs."

DUFC: ALEXANDRIA LAMONTAGNE

"There are two players that stood out [for us]," said Durham head coach, Tony LaFerrerra, "Danielle Rotheram, and Alex Lamontagne - they both scored three goals each."

Hat-trick heroines on the night, Rotheram opened the scoring in the 11th minute, before adding two more (56', 58') shortly after the half-time break. Not to be undone, Lamontagne grabbed her first in the 12th minute, slotting again in the 22nd and 73rd minutes, respectively. Taylor Potts (39') and Rebekah Hoekstra (62') completed the rout.

DUFC: DANIELLE ROTHERAM

Despite the lop-sided scoreline in his team's favour, LaFerrerra found both positives and negatives in the Durham performance.

"In the first half we played as individuals and not as team, sloppy play," he said. "[We were] much better in the second when we were able to play the ball on the ground. The first fifteen minutes we applied a lot of pressure on their back four... [but we need to] make better decisions off the ball - do not hurry the pass."

ANB: EMILY TAMBURRO

LaFerrerra selected ANB Futbol central midfielder Cat Rogers as the standout opponent, while Almeida looked to the poise and control demonstrated by Durham central defender Kayla DeSouza as a highlight of United's play. Almeida also credited his #9, Emily Tamburro, with an MVP selection.

ANB - CAT ROGERS

"I would say Emily Tamburro played a strong game in the mid-field, setting up the only goal of the night for ANB Futbol," he said. "She worked hard defending, attacking when available, and played in different positions."

Both ANB and Durham will meet again on the weekend, with the League1 Ontario Women's schedule pitting the two sides against each other on Saturday June 13 at Oshawa Civic Field #1, 5 p.m. kickoff.
