Woodbridge Strikers kept the clean sheet and rang up two over Sanjaxx Lions in League1 Ontario women's matchweek five action. Vladanka Gurovski fired home the opener for the Strikers in the first half, before Woodbridge leading scorer Chanel Hudson-Marks added the insurance marker early in the second.

"Scoring the early goal, by Vladanka Gurvoski, helped settle the players down," said Woodbridge head coach Joe Parolini. "The second goal scored by leading goal scorer Chanel Hudson-Marks put the game away and took some of the wind out of Sanjaxx."

WS: CHANEL HUDSON-MARKS

"The MVP for Woodbridge was second goal-scorer [Chanel Hudson-Marks] because she was dynamic and athletic and was able to get by our defenders at will," said Sanjaxx head coach, Laza Lowe. "The biggest challenge for our team was our willingness to compete, while the key moments in the match were in the first half of the game when we did not capitalize on the numerous chances that we had to score."

Both coaches selected MVPs that personified the effort, determination and industriousness one would like to see in a successful team.

SL: MADELINE GARDNER

"The Sanjaxx MVP was Madeline Gardner because she was our youngest player and put forth the greatest effort," said Lowe.

"WSC's outstanding player of the game was #22, April Syme," added Parolini. "The central mid-fielder, won tackles, distributed the ball, won headers, and ran at players causing havoc all day for Sanjaxx. All in a day’s work for any midfielder, and April shows why size does not count as she was the smallest player on the field. However, heart and determination certainly showed - she leads by example."

Parolini hoped this result indicated an upward swing for the Strikers' record, and pointed to a significant shift in player availability that should add real quality to the Woodbridge performances.

"Getting some of our experienced players back will help," he said. "The maturity and experience of our older players will help develop our younger players as well, as it has been our young '98 players that have helped form the nucleus of the team to date. Three players were in their first match for WSC, with another addition returning from D1. It will take some time for our returning National team veterans to gel with the other D1 players."
