Woodbridge Strikers finished L1 Cup group stage action with a gritty 3-1 win over Sanjaxx that puts them top of Group C, and moving forward with second place Durham United F.C. to the quarter-final round.

Andrew Derayeh (19'), Samer Yani (69') and Christian Cavallini (88') took care of the goalscoring for Strikers, while Sanjaxx's Fabio Vilaca (26') made sure Sanjaxx kept the scoreline tight until late in the match.

"I did not think we played well tonight, but in the end we got the win to finish first in our group," said Woodbridge head coach Peter Pinizzotto.

"The players thought that after the first goal by Andrew on a great shot that the game was going to be an easy game to win, but Sanjaxx took advantage on a bad defensive mistake to tie the game in the first half."

The half finished with both teams on an even 1-1 footing, and Strikers needed to change their gameplan to produce a victory over the determined Lions.

"Second half we did create more chances by taking more risk and attacking with more numbers," confirmed Pinizzotto. "We got two deserving goals."

Woodbridge found their inspiration from positions typically assigned a defensive brief, with Andrew Derayeh emerging from a deep central position to lead the team forward, and fullbacks becoming activated to make dangerous offensive runs forward.

"I thought Andrew [Derayeh] had a great game, not only scoring the first goal but also recovering many balls in the middle," said Pinizzotto.

"Also, I thought both of my fullbacks - Darian [Bygrave] and Vince [Sasso] - were workhorses tonight, with many overlapping runs but also able to come back and defend well."

Woodbridge will be able to get some valuable rest this weekend as the Strikers don't return to League1 action until July 11 at Tindall Field (Queens University) vs. Kingston Clippers, 2 p.m. kickoff.

Sanjaxx will be right back into the thick of league play this weekend, travelling to Hershey Centre, Mississauga to meet Sigma F.C. on Saturday July 4m 4 p.m.
