Vaughan Azzurri women hosted league leaders Durham United FC at the Ontario Soccer Centre in matchweek 18, and put a dent in the east Toronto club's title ambitions after a tight 2-1 victory.

Durham's Geneva Winterink (41') got the visitors off to a promising start, with her first half goal seemingly marking out a familiar trajectory towards victory. After an incredible season, getting 13 wins from 15 matches, Durham need only get four points to secure the inugural League1 Ontario 2015 women's title.

However the Azzurri had clearly not read the script for the day, or at the very least were intent on playing spoiler. The home side made three subs at the half-time break, and appeared to reap the rewards of any tactical tinkering after Cia Papodopolous (56') equalized shortly after the restart.

Papodopolous (69') wasn't done there either, finding the net again just before the final twenty minutes to ensure the match would end on a tense note.

Durham pushed hard for the equalizer and winner in the late stages, but couldn't find a way through a determined and defensively resilient Azzurri side that knew it had the potential champs in panic mode.

With the win, the Azzurri close to within two points of the second place Woodbridge Strikers and have two matches remaining. The first of the two matches is home at McNaughton Turf, Vaughan, on Saturday September 26 vs. Pro Stars FC - 7 p.m. kickoff.

Durham United also return to action on Saturday September 26, travelling to Country Day School, King City, to meet ANB Futbol - 4 p.m. kickoff.
