Woodbridge Strikers and Vaughan Azzurri go head-to-head in the League1 Ontario Men’s Premier Division at 2pm ET on Sunday, May 28 at York Lions Stadium.

The fixture is part of an exciting doubleheader with the Canadian Premier League, with home team York United taking to the field against Cavalry FC at 5pm ET.

Reigning L1O Men’s Premier Division champions Vaughan Azzurri have been biding their time so far this season. They currently sit 12th in the standings with two wins from four games this season, albeit with a very different group of players after several of last year’s stars signed professional deals.

It’s also an exciting opportunity for Woodbridge Strikers. Currently seventh in the table, Woodbridge have had a topsy-turvy start to the season, defeating last year’s playoff semifinalists Simcoe County Rovers but losing 4-0 to one of 2023’s surprise packages, Scrosoppi. They head into this fixture with Vaughan following a 3-2 win over BVB IA Waterloo.

When Vaughan and Woodbridge met last season, the Azzurri were won 5-2 to set them up for a successful postseason that saw them lift the title.

Ones to watch

Aidan Hugo was the main man for the Strikers last time out, scoring a brace. He is one to look out for this weekend alongside Ryley Wishart who featured 17 times for Simcoe last year and leads the Woodbridge scoring charts this campaign with three goals.

Vaughan’s Omar Marzouk has netted four in four this season; taking on responsibility to be the new Azzurri goal threat after Massimo Ferrin and Kosi Nwafornso moved to HFX Wanderers. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Gianluca Catalano has come up big time and time again, be it in the Men’s Premier Division final, Canadian Championship, or last year’s York Lions Stadium doubleheader against North Toronto Nitros, so don’t be surprised if this shot-stopper has a significant say in Sunday’s outcome.

York United vs Cavalry

Hosts York are fifth in the Canadian Premier League standings having managed two wins from six games, including a 3-0 victory in Halifax last Saturday. The Nine Stripes are yet to collect their first three points on home soil this season – can they make it count on their fourth attempt?

They face Cavalry who have been prolific in not winning, but also not losing so far in 2023. They sit third in the table with just one victory that came on Monday against Atletico Ottawa, and five ties, while still unbeaten this season along with front-runners Forge FC.

Tickets for York Lions Stadium this weekend grants access to the both the CPL and L1O game, and you can purchase them online here.
