Big wins and plenty of goals in League1 Ontario this week as we head into the second quarter of the season.

We had three L1O games on Friday night and NDC Ontario continued their winning ways in the Women’s Premier Division, beating Guelph Union 2-0 two days after seeing off Woodbridge Strikers. The squad is now littered with national-team credential as players who featured in the Concacaf U20 Championship qualifiers have returned to continue the club’s 100 per cent record this season.

In our other games on Friday, Burlington and Darby faced each other in both divisions. The women’s teams battled it out but neither could find a winner as the game ended 1-1. For the Bayhawks it was their first point of the season.

The Men’s Premier Division encounter also looked set to finish in a 1-1 tie until Jace Kotsopoulos scored an 87th-minute winner for Burlington, giving them their fourth victory of the season.

A day full of goals

In the Men’s Premier Division Game of the Week, Sigma opened the scoring against St Catharines Roma Wolves after five minutes through the in-form Emery Welshman and were three goals up after 24 minutes before Roma Wolves added one of their own. The match looked over just after the break when Sigma netted a fourth, but the hosts scored two more to set up a nervy ending that Sigma pulled through.

Scrosoppi got in on the goals by putting four past Woodbridge Strikers with four different players finding the back of the net, sending the club into the top six. Another home side to get three points on Saturday were Electric City; a Baldwin Igbinobaro first-half brace gave them victory over Master’s FA.

Simcoe County Rovers and FC London shared the points in their game, ending 1-1, while Windsor City were edged out 2-1 by North Mississauga. The Panthers also won by the same scoreline in the Women’s Premier Division, beating Hamilton United.

St Catharines Roma Wolves travelled to Tecumseh in the other women’s match on Saturday and came home with all the points courtesy of a Sabrina Bisante goal – the striker’s second of the season.

With regards to the abandonment of the Women's Premier Division game between FC London and Electric City, a formal statement will be forthcoming after the league office has received reports from the match officials, the teams and the league's onsite staff.

Waterloo waltz to victory

BVB IA Waterloo put five past Unionville Milliken in the Women’s Premier Division. They were powered by Abby Kraemer’s first-half hat-trick, and now sit fourth in the standings after Week Four. The Azzurri meanwhile continued their winning streak on Sunday with their 1-0 victory against Simcoe County Rovers.

North Toronto Nitros were also in action on Sunday as they travelled to Alliance United; both sides have made promising starts to the campaign and Nitros went into this one having won 6-1 on Wednesday. In 2022 Alliance United made the playoffs ahead of the Nitros, finishing one point ahead of their rivals to take sixth place, and the teams were similarly matched this time out with the game finishing 1-1.

There were another five goals at Sheridan Trafalgar Campus as Blue Devils ran out 4-1 winners against ProStars. ProStars fared better in the Men’s Premier Division by scoring four of their own in a six-goal thriller against BVB IA Waterloo.

Guelph United made the trip to Unionville Milliken and netted early on, setting the tone for a 4-0 victory that kept the visitors in touch with the top six.

Our only goalless game of the weekend was between Alliance United and Blue Devils. The sides couldn’t be separated on Sunday and find themselves level on points in Men’s Premier Division, sitting third and fourth respectively.

The Women's Premier Division gameweek is not finished just yet with one game taking place tonight.
