The champions impress

Three L1O matches took place on Friday night with women’s champions NDC Ontario and Simcoe County Rovers headlining proceedings in our Game of the Week. NDC scored two second-half goals to make it three wins from three this season, and they are also the only side in the division yet to concede a goal.

Hamilton United and North Mississauga kicked off the men’s weekend action in eye-catching fashion as they played out a five-goal thriller. The Panthers came back twice from a goal down but an 82nd-minute winner from Ahmad Mansour gave Hamilton a 3-2 victory.

In our other Men’s Premier Division game, BVB IA Waterloo moved above St Catharines Roma Wolves in the table by beating their rivals 1-0 and notching their first win in 2023.

Bumper Saturday

On Saturday there were four Men’s Premier Division games with teams at both ends of the table in action.

High-scoring sides Simcoe County Rovers and Sigma met in our early kick-off as both looked to continue positive starts to the new season. It was Sigma who got the better of their opponents on the day with goals from Noah Mehta and Evan Dick, and a spectacular showing from goalkeeper Dino Bontis securing the three points.

When Unionville Milliken met ProStars in 2022 they played out one of the matches of the season – it ended 7-5 to ProStars. There were just four goals this time out and the same team won again, the final score being 3-1.

North Toronto Nitros got the better of FC London, winning 2-1 and now sitting one spot off the playoff places after back-to-back victories. In our only tie of the weekend, Woodbridge Strikers and Master’s FA ended their game 0-0, giving the latter their first point of the season.

We had five matches in the Women’s Premier Division, starting with Electric City defeating Guelph Union thanks to Aysia King’s goal just two minutes after kick-off.

North Toronto were again on form as they put five goals past Tecumseh. Elise Bell went home with the match ball after her hat-trick, and Michaela Marenchin grabbed a consolation goal for the home team.

The other three matches on Saturday all ended 2-1. Alliance United beat Unionville Milliken with a winner in the 88th minute, BVB IA Waterloo ended North Mississauga’s undefeated run with Allison Beaumont’s brace, and St Catharines Roma Wolves beat Blue Devils for their first three points in 2023.

Strong day for Vaughan with Kovacevic returning

Sunday was a great day for Vaughan Azzurri in both divisions with their teams securing comfortable wins.

The women’s team ran out 6-2 winners against Hamilton United, with former L1O star Jade Kovacevic scoring a hat-trick in her first game back in the division. She was the league’s top scorer for five seasons running between 2016 and 2021 while playing for FC London and is now representing Vaughan who lead in the table standings.

In the Men’s Premier Division, the reigning champions grabbed their second win of the season in a 3-1 victory over Darby as Christopher Campoli scored his first two goals of the campaign.

Burlington also had teams in action in both divisions on Sunday; their men’s team tasted defeat for the first time this season, losing 3-0 to 2022 runners-up Blue Devils, and the women’s team went down by the same score to Woodbridge Strikers.

Our final matches of the weekend saw Alliance United establish themselves as new leaders in the Men’s Premier Division with their 3-0 victory over Windsor City. There was a six-goal thriller in the Women’s Premier Division as Darby beat ProStars 4-2.

Sigma and Electric City complete the gameweek tonight in the Men's Premier Division.
