Then there were two

Chelsea Cheung was on the scoresheet once again for Alliance United. The midfielder netted the deciding goal to defeat Woodbridge Strikers in the playoff quarterfinal last Wednesday, and opened the scoring against Vaughan Azzurri after nine minutes on Saturday.

Kristen Parkes then gave the visitors a two-goal lead 10 minutes later, before Azzurri captain Jotam Chouhan clawed one back from the penalty spot in the second half. But it wasn’t to be for the regular-season table-toppers, held off by the sixth seeds who advance to their first League1 Ontario final.

Meanwhile, it was 0-0 between NDC Ontario and FC London up until the last 20 minutes when Renee Watson found the back of the net to break the deadlock. NDC Ontario’s advantage then doubled four minutes later, the club’s top scorer Amanda Allen doing what she does best.

The two quickfire goals were enough to seal the deal for the second seeds and book their spot against Alliance United in the Championship Final at Ontario Soccer Centre on August 6.

Crazy eight

Vaughan Azzurri continued their undefeated Men’s Premier Division campaign with eight goals against North Mississauga. Kosi Nwafornso and Massimo Ferrin both scored hat-tricks with Omar Marzouk and Orlendis Benitez Hernandez also finding the net.

ProStars also won big to move into third place in the standings, Christopher Campoli bagging a brace in a 4-0 victory over Scrosoppi. Michael Solomon was on target four times for St Catharines Roma Wolves against Master’s FA, helping his side win 4-1.

Alliance United put three past Burlington to keep the pressure on the top six, aiming to mount their own playoff hunt following the achievements of the women’s team.

Nothing could separate Simcoe County Rovers and North Toronto Nitros in a top-six battle on Saturday. With the three points all but secure after Justin Santos’s second-half goal, Jarred Phillips scored a dramatic equaliser in the fourth minute of injury time, keeping the two sides on level points in the table.

Elsewhere

Miles Green was also back in the goals for Hamilton United who beat Unionville Milliken 4-2, and Alex Meczarski netted twice in Woodbridge Strikers’ narrow win against Blue Devils.

BVB IA Waterloo defeated bottom side FC London 2-1 with Malek Aborig scoring the winner in the 79th minute.

Electric City and playoff chasers Guelph United both won by a single goal against Darby and Windsor TFC respectively, as did Sigma who beat Pickering 1-0.
