Change at the top
Vaughan Azzurri went top of the Women’s Premier Division by goal difference on Sunday after they edged out former leaders FC London. Leah Pais scored the game’s decider in the 69th minute.
In Sunday’s other top-end clash, Simcoe County Rovers stopped Woodbridge Strikers’ nine-game winning streak by holding their visitors to a goalless 90 minutes.
There was another 1-0 scoreline at St Catharines Roma Wolves as they defeated Guelph Union, and Miya Grant-Clavijo scored her second brace in consecutive weekends as her Unionville Milliken side beat Burlington for their sixth win of the season.
On Friday night, Miranda Badovinac netted her first brace of the season on Friday night as Alliance United saw off Darby to kick-start the weekend.
Results at opposite ends
A successful comeback was achieved by Master’s FA at Darby who recovered from two goals down to register a point. The Men’s Premier Division bottom side are now unbeaten in four games; a team to perhaps keep an eye on going forward.
Meanwhile, leaders North Toronto Nitros made sure they maintained their status at the top of the table with a 2-1 win over Unionville Milliken.
North Mississauga defeated Sigma 3-1 on Friday night to stay in contention for the Credit River Cup, fought between teams in the Peel Region in aid of a local charity. Scrosoppi also scored three against Burlington.
Guelph United and Alliance United both won 2-0 on Friday; Nirun Sivananthan bagged himself a goal and an assist for the latter.
Hamilton United continued their winning form to defeat Electric City. Connor Wilson’s 89th-minute finish was just a consolation to the hosts’ two goals early in the second half.
Fine margins
It was a Saturday of close encounters in the Women’s Premier Division with all of the day’s wins being decided by a one-goal margin. NDC Ontario versus Electric City was one of the standouts – the latter attempting to claw back a 3-0 deficit and ruin their visitors’ unbeaten record in 2022, but they fell short.
Blue Devils star Jen Romero was on target for her side as she netted the winner against Hamilton United, and North Mississauga stayed resolute against Tecumseh to see out a 2-1 win after scoring in the 25th and 27th minutes.
Elsewhere, BVB IA Waterloo and Pickering shared the spoils at the lower end of the table after a 1-1 tie, and the game between North Toronto Nitros and ProStars stayed goalless.
In the Men’s Premier Division, Windsor TFC almost shocked high-flying Simcoe County Rovers but they left themselves with too much to do late in the game. Matthew Andres’ goal in the third minute of injury time was only enough to reduce the deficit to 3-2 after Ethan Beckford scored twice for the hosts in the first half.
Let the floodgates open
Blue Devils came from behind to put four past BVB IA Waterloo, continuing where they left off from their 9-0 win last weekend. Taha Ilyass scored his 13th goal in 12 games.
ProStars netted seven last weekend and they also scored four on Sunday to see off Woodbridge Strikers, and Vaughan Azzurri kept their pressure on Nitros at the top of the table with a remarkable victory against FC London – scoring two goals in the fifth and ninth minutes of injury time to win 3-1.
Still to come
There are still games to look forward to in the Women’s Premier Division in Week 10 as Darby host a Blue Devils side hoping to slip into the top eight, and North Mississauga visit Unionville Milliken in a mid-table encounter.
There were plenty of competitive tackles in the Credit River Cup.
