2019 Golden Boot back firing

With two goals in eight games, Jace Kotsopoulos was far from the goalscoring form that took the L1O Men’s Premier Division by storm last season.

But the striker popped up for his Guelph United side just when they needed him to score two goals in the last five minutes against Pickering to salvage a draw under the Friday night lights at Alumni Stadium. The equaliser was also his hat-trick, his first of the game coming after 20 minutes.

We also saw double figures at the weekend as Hamilton United defeated North Mississauga 10-2. Amir Shirazi scored five, Miles Green netted three, and Noah DeDomincis added a brace in two minutes.

There were plenty of goals at Unionville Milliken also as the visiting ProStars won 7-5. The hosts twice fought their way back from a two-goal deficit and thought they’d secured a point in the fourth minute of injury time, but ProStars scored twice in the following two minutes. Chidie Nnolim bagged a first-half hat-trick for the winning side.

On Sunday the unbeaten Blue Devils scored nine at Burlington’s men to move to second in the table on goal difference, with Taha Ilyass bagging four goals.

Twelve in two

The goal fest started in Week Nine last Wednesday with North Toronto Nitros’ 6-0 win over Burlington in the Women’s Premier Division. They then netted another six against BVB IA Waterloo on Saturday, Olivia Smith adding four goals to the two she scored earlier in the week.

Vaughan Azzurri also won 5-0 against Simcoe County Rovers with five different scorers, and St Catharines Roma Wolves put five past Tecumseh as Arianna Zumpano netted twice.

Woodbridge Strikers convincingly beat Pickering 4-0 on Sunday with a first-half brace from Kennedi Herrmann to extend their winning streak to nine games. The Strikers also played the day before, beating Tecumseh.

Molly Steele scored twice in Darby’s 4-1 victory over Burlington and in-form Laura Gosse bagged herself another double as her Alliance United side beat North Mississauga.

Elsewhere

NDC Ontario kept their unbeaten run alive with a 1-0 win over Guelph Union, and leaders FC London left it until seven minutes from time score a goal against Electric City to claim their three points. Miya Grant-Clavijo netted two goals in Unionville Milliken’s 3-0 win at Hamilton United and Blue Devils and ProStars tied a scoreless game.

In most weeks, St Catharines Roma Wolves’ 4-2 victory over BVB IA Waterloo would have felt like a high-scoring affair in the Men’s Premier Division.

The undefeated Vaughan Azzurri won 2-0 against Darby with Massimo Ferrin finding the net again following his hat-trick last weekend, and Scrosoppi beat Electric City to quickly forget about their loss against Blue Devils on Wednesday.

Current leaders North Toronto Nitros defeated FC London 2-0 and Alliance United put a trio of goals past Windsor TFC, while Sigma tied goalless with Simcoe County Rovers. Master’s FA and Woodbridge Strikers also shared the spoils after Kadiebue Kadiebue equalised for the Strikers in the 86th minute.

Still to come

Darby visit Pickering on Tuesday night and Alliance United take on Vaughan Azzurri in the Men’s Premier Division, with third-placed Vaughan looking to go top of the table.
