Friday fireworks

The weekend kicked off in fashion on Friday with an eight-goal thriller at Churchill Meadows, as ProStars and North Mississauga gained a point apiece in a 4-4 tie.

The visiting ProStars thought they had nicked the win in the 86th minute after Mashhood Rehman scored his second of the game and nulled North Mississauga’s comeback from 3-0 down. But the hosts had the last say, as playmaker Christopher Campoli netted late to cap off a remarkable night.

Sigma’s game at FC London on Saturday was also topsy-turvy as the visitors came from behind to lead, only for the hosts to draw the scores level again in the second half. Marcus Caldeira then netted 15 minutes from time to ensure his side returned home with three points.

Bai Essa Coker opened and closed the scoring in BVB IA Waterloo’s visit to Master’s FA, but the teams were forced to share the spoils in a 3-3 tie after both had led at some point during the 90 minutes.

Taking the points

There were some convincing wins in L1O this weekend, no better than FC London putting seven goals past their hosts Hamilton United in the Women’s Premier Division’s live-streamed game; Julia Benati doubled her season goal tally with a brace.

Electric City welcomed more than 1,000 fans to their Women’s Premier Division home opener – setting another league record – and continued where the men’s team left off in making their home at Fleming College a fortress.

Kayla McQueen and Holly O’Neill both scored twice as the Peterborough team won 4-1 against last year’s Championship finalists Blue Devils.

Four goals were scored by Alliance United against Hamilton United on Saturday in the Men’s Premier Division as Shon Siegelwachs and Atchuthan Sivananthan bagged braces; the latter taking his goal tally to five in four games.

Men's Premier Division results

An Olivia Allen hattrick helped Unionville Milliken to four goals against ProStars and their first win of the women’s season, despite the visitors drawing level in the first half through Gia Clarke-Jolly.

Simcoe County Rovers were 3-0 victors after beating a Darby side on the road for the first time this season in the Men’s Premier Division, and Simcoe’s women gave North Toronto Nitros their first taste of defeat this season by winning 2-1.

They now join FC London as the only two teams left with a 100 per cent record in the women’s league.

Breaking routine

Liam Salmon’s solitary goal helped 10-man Pickering to their first win in this year’s Men’s Premier Division.

Pickering’s women also tasted victory for the first time since 2019 – after both teams opted out of the 2021 season – as Inari Moore’s early goal proved the difference and secured a memorable home double-header for the club.

North Toronto Nitros edged past St Catharines Roma Wolves to go two points clear at the top of the Men’s Premier Division table and Unionville Milliken defeated the Electric City men. Windsor TFC and Burlington were also forced to share the spoils after sharing four goals.

Tomasz Skublak scored twice as Guelph United convincingly got back to winning ways on Sunday, defeating Woodbridge Strikers 4-1 with Jack Sears also netting from the halfway line.

Women's Premier Division results

Vaughan Azzurri’s winning streaks in both Premier Divisions were halted at the weekend with 2-2 ties. Taha Ilyass starred in a resolute Blue Devils men’s side, and Rosa Maalouf’s brace for NDC Ontario countered Nia Fleming-Thompson’s double. These two young goalscorers have a combined age of 33 years.

Woodbridge Strikers’ women claimed their second win of the season by narrowly defeating Roma Wolves in a five-goal game, and Guelph Union left it late to secure a point at home to Waterloo. AC Lang netting the crucial goal in the 94th minute with an excellent free kick.

Elsewhere the Darby women’s team won 2-1 against North Mississauga, with Tecumseh sharing the points with Alliance United.

Coming up

The fourth gameweek is rounded off on Tuesday in both Premier Divisions. Roma Wolves’ men visit Darby, and FC London’s women host BVB IA Waterloo in a clash at the business end of the table.

The next gameweek then starts on Wednesday with a bumper evening of six games in the Men’s Premier Division and three games in the Women’s Premier Division.
