Toronto, ON (March 17, 2022) – League1 Ontario (L1O) today announced its 2022 Women's Premier Division Regular Season Schedule.   The seventh season of Ontario's top women's soccer league will kick off on April 22nd, and will see a total of 10 matches contested during the opening round of fixtures.

The 2022 Season looks to be the best one yet, with a whopping 20 teams participating in the Premier Division, up from 14 teams in 2019, which marked the last time L1O could play during its normal Spring/Summer window.   Each of the 20 teams will play 19 Regular Season matches between April and late July.

A bevy of clubs will make their Women's Premier Division debuts in 2022, including Burlington SC, Pro Stars FC (representing Brampton), St. Catharines Roma Wolves (representing the Garden City as well the entire Niagara Region), Electric City FC (representing Peterborough), Simcoe County Rovers (who call Barrie home) and Canada Soccer’s NDC-Ontario squad.

Additionally, Guelph Union and the newly rebranded BVB IA Waterloo (formerly Waterloo United) will make their Premier Division debuts after opting to compete in the 2021 L1O Summer Series, in which Guelph Union were crowned Champions.

"This is going to be, without a doubt, a memorable year for the League1 Ontario Women's Division," said L1O Director of Women's Football, Chelsea Spencer. "Everyone, from players to coaches to fans, is absolutely buzzing to kickoff the 2022 season. The league has grown not only in numbers but in quality and there is now so much on the line each and every week when the players step out onto the pitch."

2022 LEAGUE1 ONTARIO WOMEN'S PREMIER DIVISION SCHEDULE HAS DROPPED

The 2022 Regular Season marks the beginning of what will be a two-year race to determine which 10 teams will populate the Women's Premier Division in 2024 and which 10 teams will be relegated to the L1O Championship Division.  League1 Ontario announced its groundbreaking "2024 Plan" earlier this year, which will see the introduction of a new three-tier competition pyramid.  Without a doubt, every club is highly motivated to keep its place in the top tier.

The reigning Premier Division Champions, Woodbridge Strikers, will look to get their season off to a flying start on Opening Night, making the short trip to the Ontario Soccer Centre Stadium, where they will square off against a young and talented NDC-Ontario side, which will feature a number of Canadian U17 and U20 youth internationals.  That match will also mark the return of the Livestream of the Week and will be broadcast via the L1O YouTube Channel.

The season will see teams playing 19 regular season matches over 14 weeks, requiring a larger number of mid-week fixtures than usual.  The Regular Season concludes on July 24th.

L1O License Holders voted in January to introduce a new Playoff format, whereby the top 6 teams in the table at the end of the Regular Season advance to the post-season.  The top 2 finishers will advance directly to the Semi-Finals, which are set for July 30th or 31st, while the teams finishing in the 3rd through 6th spots in the table will be required to take part in a "play-in" round in order to book their ticket to the Semi-Finals.

The Championship Final has been set for Saturday, August 6th and will once again be staged at the Ontario Soccer Centre Stadium in Vaughan.

League1 Ontario will also be unveiling a revamped website in the coming weeks. The full 2022 schedule will be uploaded exclusively to that new website.  However, until the new website goes live, the full Women's Premier Division schedule can be found here

Regular Season schedules for the Women’s Reserve Division, which kicks off in early May, will be published the week of April 4th.
