Top Level of Women's Soccer in Ontario is Coming to the Talent Hotbed of Brampton

Pro Stars FC has been granted a license to join the League1 Ontario’s Women’s Division for the 2022 campaign, marking the club’s return to the top-level of women’s football in Ontario for the first time since 2015, when it was one of the original seven teams in the league’s debut season.

Pro Stars FC, which was founded in 2012, are excited to return to the Women’s Division after taking some time to “regroup,” as Technical Director Josef Komlodi puts it, and they are very committed to investing resources towards the growth and development of the women’s game within their organization and their community.

“The league looked at our organizational structure and how we properly aligned everything to be successful,” Komlodi told League1 Ontario. “We have welcomed very talented female leaders to operate our women’s program. We are excited to offer a unique program: football for women, run by women.”

The club, which operated a women’s team in the 2021 L1O Reserve Division, has named League1 Ontario All-Star Kennedi Herrmann as their Director of Women’s Programming. Herrmann will be supported by Gabriella Trichilo, who is a UEFA “A” licensed coach and who will serve as Technical Advisor to the program.

“The game is bigger than just kicking the ball around,” Komlodi said. “We want to go the extra mile make sure these ladies feel they can do something different and it's going to influence the future generation of female leaders.”

With their return to League1 Ontario’s Women’s competition, Pro Stars FC becomes the 18th team in the Women’s Premier Division, following the announcement of St. Catharine’s Roma Wolves late last week. On the Men’s side, the club has competed in every L1O season since 2015.

“We are extremely proud to represent this community in League1 on the Men's side for many years and now are even more proud to represent them on the female side of the game as well,” said Trichilo. “We are truly honoured to help the female side of soccer grow in Canada and very happy to be included in the expansion of the league for the 2022 season.”

Komlodi also notes the importance of bringing top-level women's football to the city Brampton and the northern parts of the Peel-Halton district, which is rich in talent and passion for the sport but which has been lacking in accessibility and opportunity.

“I believe this community and this part of the region is underserved…There is a missing link there and it can be now fulfilled.”
