Men’s Premier Division Matchweek 8: Guelph humbled, Vaughan stands as only unbeaten side

This weekend’s big men’s game did not disappoint Friday night when FC London handed Guelph United their first loss of the season with a 3-1 decision. A brace from Ethan Gopaul and follow-up from long-time striker Connor Wilson gave the Londoners three unanswered goals and a statement win on their Western Division and Southwestern Ontario rivals. The result means the teams are level on points in second, though Guelph has a match at hand. Blue Devils FC jumped into first in the west with a 2-1 win over North Mississauga also on Friday.

A goal-filled, four-match Saturday slate saw a whopping 19 goals, most of which in Masters FA’s 4-2 win over North Toronto Nitros and the 3-3 draw shared between Sigma FC and Brampton ProStars. Elsewhere, Darby FC bested Unionville Milliken 2-0 and Scrosoppi FC got back-to-back victories with a 3-2 win over Windsor TFC to take the two-game season sweep. A second-half brace from Mulder Tyrone wasn’t enough for the Windsorites, who have managed just one point on the season (0-1-7).

1812 Barrie FC had a busy match week as he only team to play two matches… though both were losses. The side fell to Vaughan 2-1 Sunday night – on two goals from the red hot Raheem Rose – following up a 3-1 loss to Woodbridge Strikers Thursday. A brace from Dante Pavan gave The Bridge their first win on the season and cancelled out this Navid Rahman strike.

Weekend play kicks off Friday in an East tilt between Darby FC and Masters FA. Darby will be looking to climb into third place and extend a four-match undefeated streak – a big turn of form from their opening season three-match losing skid. Other eastern division tilts include North Toronto Nitros taking on 1812 Barrie FC (6:30pm on Saturday), Blue Devils hosting Sigma FC (2pm on Sunday), and Unionville Milliken visiting Woodbridge Strikers (7pm on Sunday).

In the west, Guelph will welcome Scrosoppi (1pm ET on Saturday), Windsor will host London (4:00pm on Saturday), and North Mississauga pays a visit to ProStars Brampton (7:00pm on Saturday).

Vaughan, who stands as the only L1O men’s team still undefeated (6-1-0, 19 points) gets the weekend off.

Women’s Premier Division Matchweek 8: Playoff hunt intensifies, London returns to winning ways

League-leaders FC London comfortably returned to the win column Saturday on a 3-1 dousing of second-place Hamilton United in London after a shaky draw to Woodbridge last week. Jade Kovacevic added to her golden boot-leading 15-goal tally while midfielders Julia Benati & Angelika Mihalopoulos grabbed the others. London extended their lead atop the regular-season standings to a staggering 10 points (7-0-1, 22 points) with the result.

Elsewhere, Woodbridge Strikers followed up their result to London with a 4-0 win over Techumseh SC at the University of Windsor and North Toronto Nitros showed their teeth in a big 2-1 win over favoured Blue Devils. Quickfire goals from Morgan Fenton (13’) and Rufina Abdurusul (15’) gave the Nitros their third win in four matches as they enter the playoff hunt (3-5-0, nine points).

This weekend will see three matches open the final month of the regular season, starting with Techumseh visiting the Blue Devils (4:00pm on Saturday) and North Toronto looking to keep the momentum going when they host Vaughan Azzurri (6:00pm on Saturday). Sunday will see Hamilton head up the QEW to face the aforementioned rising Woodbridge side (3:00pm).
