Women’s Premier Division Matchweek 7: Kovacevic shines as London builds on lead

FC London remained the story of the women’s premier division as they stayed undefeated with a 4-0 romp over North Toronto Nitros. Jade Kovacevic's road trip hattrick put the Londerers on 18 points (6-0-0) and two wins ahead of second-placed Hamilton United, who had the weekend off.

Two matches Sunday ended with a one-nil scoreline, starting off with Blue Devils FC downing competitive rivals Woodbridge Strikers on the road. Amanda Shmalz goal's was enough for the Oakville side that bounced back from consecutive losses to London and Hamilton. Elsewhere, Vaughan Azzurri narrowly defeated travel-hardened Tecumseh FC 1-0 Sunday at North Maple Regional Park thanks to a goal from veteran operator Jessie Faber.

Vaughan and Oakville, third and fourth in the standings, will clash Friday (8pm ET) in a crucial make-up-ground tilt as the season crosses its halfway mark. Elsewhere on Friday, Hamilton hosts bottom side North Toronto Nitros (7pm ET).

Elsewhere, North Mississauga downed Scrosoppi FC 3-1 for their first win of the season Friday. Darby FC edged 1812 Barrie 3-2, and Blue Devils defeated Windsor TFC 4-1 in Amherstburg.

A top-of-the-west clash between undefeated Guelph United and Sigma FC on Saturday was postponed by league officials after the latter side was subject to COVID-19 restrictions.

Men’s Championship nears conclusion + Reserves at midway point

Elsewhere, the Men's Championship Series wrapped up its initial slate of matches Saturday with two tilts; Whitecaps London dispatching 4-0 Blue Devils B and Toronto FC U17 edging Vaughan Azzurri 3-2 – a result that insured TFC’s status at the top of the standings (13 points, 4-1-1) going into the finals slated set for later this Fall (more details coming soon). Postponed matches are expected to be rescheduled soon as well.

Women’s and Men’s reserve divisions continue as teams reach the halfway point on the season. Men’s division midweek action saw six matches including Unionville beating Masters “C” 6-2 and undefeated Guelph United “B” besting Tecumseh “B” 7-1.

Woodbridge Strikers “B” remains the team to beat on the women’s side after thrashing Techumseh 14-1 on Sunday to remain top of the standings on 22 points (7-0-1) and a staggering +39 goal differential.
