FC London gained valuable points on the top of the women's table following a 7-1 dismantling of visitors Sanjaxx Lions on Matchweek 20.

With the divisional leaders North Mississauga drawing with second place side Vaughan Azzurri earlier in the day, FC London found themselves three points out of second and five points out of first with the result. FC London also holds two and three games in hand on the first and second place sides.

"It leaves us in a really good position," said FC London head coach, Mike Marcoccia.

"In the standings we are still trying to climb and we have good teams ahead of us, so we are not really looking too carefully at the standings for now. A string of good results in this month and then we could start talking about something like that."

Sanjaxx Lions did neutralize the direct threat of league-leading scorer Jade Kovacevic on the score-sheet, but could not prevent her from creating more than half the goals.

"I think tonight the most important take-away for us is our team is in good position in terms of how we have developed," said Marcoccia.

"We have the top goalscorer in the league, we won a game 7-1, and she has got four assists rather than goals and I think that shows where we are at in terms of how this team is functioning right now."

Ashley Campbell (23', 82') and Kaila Novak (77', 88') led the scoring for London with a brace each, while Robyn Scott (12'), Nicole Nielsen (54') and Marisa Oliveira (72') finished one a piece to put the result well out of doubt.

A late goal from Sanjaxx's Ruqqayya Hirji (85') gave the visitors some consolation, but head coach Laza Lowe said the scoreline was not the main priority.

"We were just trying to play good soccer," he said. "My team is younger and we were just trying to play a bit against a team that is more experienced, physical, stronger and faster. My girls are just trying to play well and they are getting better at doing it."

"At this level though if you make crucial mistakes you end up picking the ball out of the back of your net. The game was not as bad as the scoreline is though."

FC London will next play Durham United FA on September 14 at German Canadian Club, London.

Sanjaxx Lions will next play Durham United FA on September 17 at Monarch Park, Toronto.
