Vaughan Azzurri closed the gap on women's division leaders North Mississauga SC to two points after a dominant 7-0 victory over Durham United FA.

"They obviously brought a young team," said Vaughan Azzurri head coach, Carmine Isacco.

"But a lot of our group are 2002s as well, and I thought we played well. I thought the first twenty it took us some time to get our feet but I thought we did well with the ball, with our finishing, and I thought it was a good experience for the young girls of Durham as well."

Colleen Beesley (6', 25') scored a brace while Leah Pais (38'), Anna Karpenko (48'), Sami Falkenstein (76') and Olivia Lukasewich (87') added to a Durham own goal (78'), while Tamara Orlando kept the clean sheet.

"We had some experienced players that made a difference for sure, but our young players were fantastic today as well," said Isacco.

"Anna Karpenko came in and scored a goal off the bat and set up two, and Siena [Stambolich] in the middle of the field was fantastic too, as well as Hannah [Chown] in the back, who was just solid. These are fifteen year old girls that are growing every time and I think their performance was something that stood out for sure."

Despite the loss, Durham United FA head coach Ramin Mohammadi was proud of his team's display, and especially the competitive ability of his young charges.

"We brought a squad that was 95 per cent of a younger age from OPDL, and they did a great job," he said. "The score was not in our favour but Vaughan is a great team and the main thing is our girls did a good job. That is the future of this development league."

"We did create some scoring opportunities from the beginning and when looked at in the development pathway, I am very happy with our players."

Vaughan can now turn their attention to a busy end-of-season period, during which they must catch North Mississauga at the top of the table and attempt to stave off FC London - who are only three points behind (with three games in hand on the Azzurri).

"We have two tough character type games against London and North Miss ahead," said Isacco.

"We need to establish a winning mentality for sure, and play every roll of the ball. We want to earn it, and fight for it, and not give London or North Miss an easy out. We want to be there in the end if we can."

Vaughan Azzurri will next play Darby FC on August 25 at Whitby Soccer Centre, Whitby.

Durham United FA will next play Unionville Milliken SC on August 25 at Kinsmen Park, Pickering.
