Jarek Whiteman (14', 37, 90') tacked on three goals to his league leading goal column, and along with a clean sheet by Shyon Gaeeni led Vaughan Azzurri to a 3-0 win over Sanjaxx Lions.

On a weekend when their east division rivals, Woodbridge Strikers, dropped points to west division leaders Sigma FC, Vaughan had to keep pace at the top and narrowed the gap to five points.

"We absolutely can catch them," said Vaughan assistant coach, Patrice Gheisar.

"As far as today, I think the effort was there but what I think we were missing was a little bit of quality as the game went on in the second half," he explained.

"Credit to Sanjaxx, I think they adjusted well at half-time and made it very difficult for us to play in the second half."

Vaughan had a bright start through Whiteman's first half brace, but were held until very late in the match to get the insurance goal.

"We did have five players here today that are 16 years old and were making their debut, so I think that took away from our mojo our gas a little but I like to think the guys get up for every game and don't look past it," said Gheisar.

"Credit to Sanjaxx again, they made it really hard on us to play."

With the goals, Jarek Whiteman kept his nose ahead of the defending Golden Boot holder, FC London's Elvir Gigolaj, with a total of 17 goals on the season. Gigolaj scored four against Masters FA Saints in Matchweek 16 and currently sits on 12 goals.

Sanjaxx Lions will next play FC London on August 18 at German Canadian Club, London.

Vaughan Azzurri will next play Durham United FA on August 18 at Kinsmen Park, Pickering.
