OPDL and League1 Ontario teams to compete in respective Cup finals at the Ontario Soccer Centre
August 1, 2017
Vaughan, ON – Sunday, August 6th will be a showcase of some of the best of what Ontario has to offer, when teams from the Ontario Player Development League (OPDL) and League1 Ontario will compete in their respective Cup finals.
The Cup Finals day, hosted at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan, will kick off at 8:30 a.m. with the OPDL, as presented by Toronto FC. Eight OPDL teams will seek glory, in four finals, across two age groups.
The day will conclude with the League1 Ontario Men’s and Women’s L1 Cup finals. The Women’s division is presented by Peel Regional Police.
"This Sunday will be a great opportunity to see the special talent that our member organizations are developing from all across Ontario," said Johnny Misley, Ontario Soccer Executive Director.
"OPDL and League1 Ontario are leading the way with developing our future Canadian stars, as well as showcasing them to the next level so these athletes can achieve their soccer potential."
The L1 Cup finals, which will begin with the Women’s division at 6 p.m., sees FC London taking on the Woodbridge Strikers. Both teams will be eager to avenge their 2016 L1 Cup tournament losses, as FC London and Woodbridge were each dispatched in penalties in the semi-final and final by eventual champions Vaughan Azzurri.
The Men's L1 Cup finals, which kicks off at 8:30 p.m., will see Vaughan SC facing off against Woodbridge Strikers in a repeat of the 2016 final. Vaughan beat Woodbridge after a single goal from defender Kamal Miller to win the 2016 championship, and Woodbridge will be hoping to reverse the outcome in 2017.
"We're excited for a pair of fantastic matches that will cap a day where some of Ontario’s best athletes will be on display," said Dino Rossi, League1 Ontario Commissioner.
"As part of Ontario's Talented Pathway, League1 Ontario expects to see many of the OPDL players in action on Sunday, as part of League1 clubs in the very near future."
In the Girls U-15 OPDL final, Vaughan SC will take on Ottawa South United, while in the Girls U-16 final, Burlington Youth will square off against Aurora FC.
In the Boys U-15 OPDL final, United FA will face West Ottawa, while in the Boys U-16 final, Vaughan will meet Hamilton United Elite.
"As a new competition this year, the OPDL Cup exposes the players to more pressure-situation matches," said Gary Miller, Ontario Soccer Technical Director.
"Designed as a way to improve the players’ response to the kind of games they will encounter as they progress through the Talented Pathway, this Sunday will be a chance to watch some of the best soccer our province has to offer."
