Former Canada U20 player Victoria Pickett (61') hit the only goal of the game as Aurora FC downed women's division leaders Unionville Milliken SC 1-0 at Bill Crothers Turf, Unionville.

Aurora's keeper Sarah Charnock kept the clean sheet in a disciplined performance from the understrength visiting side.

"It was a very even first half, both teams had good opportunities and we were lucky not to go down, but that's the game for you - sometimes it swings for you, sometimes it swings for the other team," said Aurora head coach, Gianni Cimini.

"We didn't have the bench today that we hoped we would have so the gameplan for today was to utilize our top players and it worked for us," he added.

"The plan was to stay connected, try and play into the better players feet, and opportunities will come."

"Luckily it was a great ball across that Victoria finished off," continued Cimini.

"I think that goal might have affected Unionville a little bit, but I believe they are a very strong side and very disciplined. For a team with that type of quality, they could definitely turn around any type of score."

With the loss, Unionville maintains position as the top team in the women's division, but with only one win in five matches - their well-built lead is starting to crumble.

"Football is a funny game," said Unionville coach, Glenn Faulknor. "If you don't finish your chances the other team gains in confidence and strength and we didn't take our chances in the first half. We had three solid chances, one sitter, and didn't put the ball in the back of the net, while they finished."

"Moving forward, this happens in football and we'll chalk it up to one of those games. All season we've been hitting those type of goals and this one of those days for us where the ball wouldn't go in the net for us. I think they outplayed us in the second half. The first half was definitely even, but they really came out in the second half and did what they had to do, especially defensively."

Aurora FC will next play Darby FC on July 29 at St. Maximillion Kolbe HS, Aurora.

Unionville Milliken SC will next play North Mississauga on July 29 at Hershey Centre, Mississauga.
