Vaughan Azzurri maintained their grip on second place in the women's division with a 2-1 win over a difficult to contain Aurora FC side on Matchweek Nine.

"We had to adjust positionally, we had some players out of position today," revealed Vaughan head coach Carmine Isacco.

"We also have some players just coming off injury that haven't played much, so we really needed to adjust."

"We wanted to invite them to play on the outside and try and take away their central players because Sarah [Stratigakis] and Victoria [Pickett] are special players and they can hurt you. They are both quality players and they still did a lot on their own on the dribble, and Sarah of course scored a fantastic goal on her own."

"We tried to keep the ball away from them or if they did get it we wanted it to be in areas where we could press and support."

"We looked to transition and I think we got opportunities off of transition and off of turnovers in the wing channel and that is how we wanted to establish our gameplan," he added.

Colleen Beesley (4') and Anna Kowalczyk (63') got the goals for Vaughan, while Sarah Stratigakis (72') scored an outstanding effort for Aurora FC to make it a battle to the end.

"Our gameplan was to be aggressive and to limit the time they had on the ball because they are a team that will try and dominate the ball," said Aurora FC head coach, Gianni Cimini.

"We were aggressive and we did try to put pressure on them and we ended up having a lot of possession as well. I thought it was an excellent game and overall I was pleased with how the girls followed through on the gameplan."

Aurora were very close to finishing the match on level terms, and their keeper - Canada U20 keeper Patricia Koutoulas - also saved a penalty to keep the result within reach.

"Patricia has been very good for us this season," said Cimini. "The team has full confidence in her and it wasn't a surprise to me that she could come up in a big moment like that one."

"At the end we were pushing and pushing and pushing and we had a lot of chances in and around the box, off a cross, corner kick, set-pieces,"

"The girls were striving for it and sometimes an inch this way, an inch that way, and you get a better opportunity. I felt that they really pushed through the whole ninety minutes."

Aurora FC will next play Durham United FA on June 30 at Kinsmen Park Turf, Pickering.

Vaughan Azzurri will next play North Mississauga Panthers on July 2 at McNaughton Turf, Vaughan.
