Shana Flynn (55') and Samantha Chang (69') scored within a quarter hour of each other in the second half, and keeper Marissa Zucchetto added a clean sheet, to give Unionville Milliken a 2-0 win over hosts Darby FC and maintain a grip on first place in the table.

"The nucleus of this team is '99 and they are used to doing well, and this is the way we like it," said Unionville team official, Alex Morales.

"We like other teams gunning for us and also every game becomes a big match for them, which helps their development. We love it, and we don't take it for granted either. We've worked hard for this and will continue to."

"I thought this team, like most, was very well organized and tough to break down," he added, regarding Darby.

"They clogged up the middle but we found a way again, which is good to see."

Darby FC did a very good job of keeping the women's division leaders to few opportunities and Darby head coach Mirco Schroff said it was by design.

"Our defensive shape wasn't bad at times, I thought we made it quite hard for Unionville to penetrate and create enough substantial chances," agreed Schroff.

"I don't there were many overall in the game, especially in the first half. Being nil nil at half-time was one of our objectives and that was the first time this year where we didn't concede a goal in the first half. Our objective was met in that department, but we just didn't have enough firepower to go forward and create chances ourselves."

"I think we got off to a slow start in the attacking phase," he added. "In the first half we definitely had a hard time connecting our passes, conducting a decent attacking phase at any point and time throughout the game. It certainly wasn't our best game going forward."

"In the last fifteen minutes there were a couple, and we could have maybe played that a bit better to get one, but Unionville just took advantage well of two situations and punished us."

Unionville's Morales selected Canada U17 player Samantha Chang as a Unionville player to highlight.

"I'm going to say our captain Samantha [Chang] did pretty well controlling the middle and I think she led the way today," he said.

"I saw her leadership skills on display, rallying the troops and that kind of thing. Again, it's a team effort, but she did stand out. She has been very important to us this season. She is one of the younger girls on the squad but she is definitely a leader. She's a very technical player and a very big heart. She has been very important for us."

For Darby, despite the loss head coach Schroff has seen steady improvement, and highlighted the play of several individuals while looking forward to the next fixture.

"I'm looking at Robyn Bonneau as a centre-back," he said. "That's not usually her position and I thought she had a really good game, she was defensively strong and her positioning was in order."

"I thought Arnelle Douglas that came in for the last fifteen on twenty minutes created a bit up front as well," he added.

"She has quite a bit of speed and she came in fresh and tried to create a couple things. She had two actions that led into two scoring opportunities. But, overall, I think we needed a few more players to step up today to carry us through the game."

"We have our next game next Friday against Sanjaxx and certainly we have proven this year that we are in a more mature stage as a team and we're not broken down easily, as we were last year in our first year," he concluded.

"This year with the young players that we have it is still a struggle but I'm seeing progress and a bit more stability and I think against Sanjaxx we have a chance next week to redeem ourselves and hopefully get three points."

Darby FC will next play Sanjaxx Lions on June 23 at South Courtice Turf, Courtice.

Unionville Milliken SC will next play FC London on June 23 at Bill Crothers Turf, Unionville.
