Visitors Darby FC got off to an ideal start against hosts West Ottawa SC on Matchweek Seven, with Lauryn Arruda (8') smoothly finishing a penalty to get the 1-0 lead.

"I think we got off to a good start after going up one nil after only ten minutes," said Darby head coach Mirco Schroff.

"We just discussed in the change room how, as a young team, we need to show more maturity in hanging onto the leads that we get. We need to at least get into half-time without getting knocked back by a couple goals and always having to recreate that effort of coming back into a game."

The deficit just served to wake up West Ottawa, who started the day in a three-way battle for third position in the League1 women's division table, and ended squarely in second position after goals from Melissa Baynes (18'), Sarah Royer (30') and a brace from Olivia Cooke (52', 71') brought them the 4-1 final result.

West Ottawa also brought through a couple of players from their youth program, who performed well on the day.

"I thought we did well for the most part," said West Ottawa head coach, Kristina Kiss. "We connected well at certain times in the game, and we controlled some very good players that they had on their wings."

"The call-ups were amazing," she added. "We had Carina [Vincelli] at the back and she played a full ninety minutes, and Jenna [Matsukubo] came in and she played a full half. They fit in perfectly."

But the highlight for me was Olivia Cooke scoring two goals, that was fantastic," she concluded.

"She's a young player, a U16, and Miranda [Smith] at the back had a fantastic game as well."

West Ottawa had three times the shots (10-3) but momentum shifted in favour of the visitors around the hour mark, and Darby were unlucky not to cut into the lead with a variety of near misses.

"The most positive aspect of that momentum shift was that it was caused by two players that we brought on that are call-ups from our youth program," said Darby's Schroff.

"That is the big program for us, and we have said that from the get go, more or less we are going to slide those players in and give them opportunities when they are ready for the challenge and to see what the next level is that they should aspire towards."

"I thought they held themselves well today and we also had two other youth call-ups in the team, Giulia Giovinazzi and Vittoria Greco played almost the whole team," he added.

"We managed to get all four youth players into the team and give them opportunities to perform and see what that level looks like."

West Ottawa will next play North Mississauga on June 17 at Hershey Centre, Mississauga.

Darby FC will next play Unionville Milliken SC on June 16 at South Courtice Turf, Courtice.
