North Mississauga Panthers went to South Courtice Turf on Friday night and put in a determined and disciplined performance to secure a 4-1 win over Darby FC.

Laura Twidle (14', 26'), Roselyne Kyeame (53') and Cassandra Briscoe (70') gave the visitors an unassailable lead before Darby's Tori Chia (90') pulled one back for the home side at the death.

North Mississauga head coach Jhon Ardila indicated that the team's 4-3-3 system was particularly effective on the day, and singled out the work of duo Twidle and Kyeame as crucial to the team's success.

"One of the keys of our gamplan tonight was to have a full ninety minute performance and I think the girls did that," he said.

"We were very strong, very organized and we showed some good tactical discipline. I think the 4-3-3 we used gave us a good result."

"We signed Laura Twidle a couple of weeks ago. She is a player with a lot of experience at the university level. She fits very well into the 4-3-3 system that we use."

"One of the reasons for that is we play our wingers inside to make a very strong middle, and she formed a very strong partnership with Rossy in that way. Rossy is a North Mississauga product and she has just returned from university as well. The idea with this team is to give the chance to North Mississauga kids to play at this level."

Darby head coach Mirco Schroff felt his team got out to a good start before conceding an unlikely early goal. He pointed to the pair of North Miss goals around the hour mark that truly confirmed the defeat.

"I think the first twenty minutes we had a good start to the game, until we were scored on to make it one nil. It was kind of out of the blue really, it was the first time they got into the box," he said.

"We just didn't cover the far post and we didn't stay goal-side, so they got a tap-in, which was well-played on their part but should have been dealt with on our part. I think that's carried through the whole game. We were not able today to deal with their long ball strategy."

Schroff also felt Twidle and Kyeame were difference makers for North Miss.

"Those two were obviously very mobile players, flexibly interchanging positions and always on the go causing us trouble," he said.

"I think we could have done a better job closing down the long ball earlier and if that wasn't the case we could have closed down the balls through with a bit more maturity by dropping ten or fifteen yards to take away that space they were trying to play into. The two goals they had just after the half-time in particular kind of broke our back today. We were not able to find the means to deal with it."

Darby also started their season at home to North Miss in 2016, and in comparing the two matches Schroff said he thought his team showed a lot of upside and had hopefully turned a corner for the 2017 season.

"I think we've seen it today as a team we have improved our style of play, although we are still a young squad and are developing," he explained.

"I think we knocked the ball around decently at times. I think we created enough chances to capitalize on a few more goals probably in this game. But certainly that is what we want to see long-term - sticking to a style of play that we identify ourselves with, which is a possession game with purpose."

"We'll look to get better each game going forward to make better decisions more consistently and we're hopeful that it will come together."
