After their star striker Laura Gosse took a bad knock, Durham United FA finally kicked into gear and hammered home three goals during the lengthy second half injury time to beat Sanjaxx Lions 5-1.

"The weather played a factor in the second half with the rain, but we missed a lot of chances as usual and it has been three games in a row where we should have put away teams but we didn't," said Durham head coach, Ron Clarke.

"It got to 2-1, and then Laura got hurt," he added. "We took that time to reflect and say to ourselves 'we need to do a job, and we need to do it for Laura' and I think the players responded fantastically, and we put them away."

Alicia Palister (13', 90' + 13') led the way with a brace, while Laura Gosse (34'), Parys Kerr (90' + 20') and Mikaela Gualandris (90'+ 22') contributed singles.

Sanjaxx's Shayneisha Kelly (78') scored with just over fifteen minutes of regular time left in the match, making for a tense finish, but the match was then disrupted while Gosse's head injury was addressed.

Durham returned from the interval the stronger of the two sides, and quickly changed the 2-1 scoreline into a 5-1 rout.

"It was a great feeling at first," said Sanjaxx goalscorer, Shayneisha Kelly. "The score was 2-1 and we were making a comeback. It was definitely a great moment for us. It was a header off a free kick and our team celebrated, we were extremely happy."

"It was definitely a strange feeling to have the game stopped for such a long period of time," she added.

"We were all warmed up, we had our momentum, and for the game to be stopped for so long definitely threw us off for a bit. We came back in a little bit cold and it's definitely something we need to work on before the next game we play."

"Before our return match with Durham next week I think we can take away that we need to come out strong and keep it going right to the end, no matter what the delays are or any insane things that happen during the game," she concluded.

"We just need to focus and make sure we keep our momentum throughout the whole game."
