A back and forth goalfest between Vaughan and ANB ended in a 4-2 victory for the home side, as the Azzurri got a brace from Nicole Lyon (29', 53'), and two timely strikes from Aisha Lewis (55') and Shannon Wood (85').

The Azzurri shot out to an early lead as Lyon bagged her first inside half an hour, but ANB levelled the scoreline via the boot of Kelsey Araujo (45') before the end of the first frame.

However it was Lyon again to put the home team ahead just after the restart, and this time teammate Lewis followed up within two minutes to give the Azzurri a valuable two goal lead. Courtney Evans (60') gave ANB a lifeline with her goal on the hour, but Vaughan's Shannon Wood closed off any chance of a late ANB revival after depositing the winner five minutes from the end of regular time.

VA: NOUR GHONEIM

"ANB Futbol hit two cross-bars in succession from long-range shots," said head coach, Marcelo Almeida. "If only one of them dropped in, the game would have been tied and we were putting some pressure on their back-line for perhaps a go-ahead goal. However, due to ANB pressing, space opened in the back and allowed Vaughan to score their fourth goal, which sealed their victory."

Almeida identified two key players in the match, one for ANB and one for the Azzurri.

"Victoria Duraes played in several positions to cover up some injury gaps during the game. Won a lot of important tackles in mid-field and worked hard throughout the 90 minutes despite the oppressive heat."

"For Vaughan, #10 – Nour Ghoneim," he added. "An up-front playmaker with excellent first touch; set up opportunites for various teammates."

Both teams will be back in the thick of it for matchweek ten, as Vaughan is home at McNaughton Turf, Maple, to fourth place team North Mississauga Panthers on Saturday July 25, 2 p.m.

ANB is away to third place Woodbridge Strikers on Sunday July 26 at Vaughan Grove - 5 p.m. kickoff.
